About this Event
Have you ever Googled a fact while watching a historical TV show? Wondered whether the pixilated clothing in your fantasy video game was historically accurate (even though it isn't technically set in the Middle Ages)? Pondered whether your ideas for play a world war themed strategy board game were similar to prime ministers and presidents of the past? Well, you are not alone, and this is the event for you!
This interactive session will ask you - the players - to come to the table(s) ready to think a little bit differently about how we learn history. The event will begin with a short opening talk by Tess Watterson, a PhD candidate at the University of Adelaide researching historical games, then you will have the opportunity to play with the past yourself, with some of the many board games in the games library at The Lost Dice. The games have been chosen for their historical inspiration, and you'll be encouraged to discuss and debate the different ways you might actually be gaining historical knowledge, or at least engaging in historical thinking, while you are playing. This events offers an outside the box way to do history, perhaps challenging some preconceptions about the field of history, but in the very least giving you a chance to have some good old dice-rolling fun.
